Huskisson
Refined Coastal Luxury
Nestled amongst the native bushland of the NSW South Coast, the Huskisson Duplex challenges the traditional language of coastal architecture. Rather than drawing on the familiar palette of white weatherboards and light, airy finishes, this project embraces bold materiality, sculptural form and a refined monochrome aesthetic that feels both contemporary and deeply connected to its natural surroundings.
Designed by Duplex Building Design and built by CKS Projects, the vision was to create two architecturally distinctive homes that reflected the clients' appreciation for expressive design and carefully considered materials. Every element was selected to create a home that feels calm, sophisticated and enduring.
Reimagining Coastal Living with a Sophisticated Edge
The home's defining feature is its striking Shou Sugi Ban timber cladding. Inspired by the traditional Japanese technique of charring timber, the dark exterior sits comfortably within the surrounding bushland, echoing the rich tones of blackened eucalyptus trunks while providing a dramatic yet understated architectural presence.
A Moody Take on Coastal Living
Inside, the monochrome palette continues through polished concrete floors, black detailing and sculptural fixtures that reinforce the home's contemporary character. Large expanses of glazing invite natural light into the interiors while maintaining a strong visual connection to the surrounding landscape. A suspended black metal fireplace forms the centrepiece of the living space, adding both warmth and sculptural interest.
Ideas turned to a Reality
Beyond the architecture, CKS Projects delivered the complete outdoor environment, including the pool and surrounding landscaping. Clean concrete surfaces, restrained planting and thoughtfully detailed outdoor spaces extend the architectural language beyond the home's walls, creating seamless connections between indoor living, entertaining and the surrounding bushland.
The Huskisson Duplex demonstrates how bold material choices, careful craftsmanship and close collaboration between designer and builder can create a home that feels entirely at ease in its environment.
